Catherine on being bold
I didn’t feel the gap between men and women in my younger years as much as I do now. I really wonder why things have changed. Maybe they haven’t changed. Maybe I was young and naïve. I’m not sure if it’s because there is a greater focus on the career progression of women.
I can remember dramatic times when I had young kids and was trying to balance work and life. There was an important event that I didn’t want to miss. I had to figure out what to do in order to take time off without creating the negative perception that work was a lower priority.
I figured it out; it definitely got the creative juices flowing. One thing I learned is how to discuss commitments and conflicts. You can say, ‘I have a conflict or another commitment.’
You have to be assertive as a woman. You have to ask for what you want. Be bold. You can’t let fear of failure get in your way.
If you look at statistics, there are still more men in management and leadership positions. Women have always had to be better at what they do to qualify for the next job, the next promotion. Perhaps the stakes are higher for women.
