Idelia on living in South Africa

South Africa is probably more advanced when it comes to being a woman in the workplace. I think we started to focus on diversity a little bit earlier, probably due to apartheid. We did diversity training in school in the late 80s and started to work on diversity in the early-to-mid-90s.

A lot of the stuff I’m seeing here in the United States, we’d already experienced in South Africa 10 to 15 years ago. So, I can see the differences and see that we still have a ways to go here.

It probably also had a lot to do with the company I was working for in South Africa. They had put a lot of effort into working through these things over the last few decades. So, it was more inclusive there. It wasn’t so much of a conscious effort. It just was natural.
