Learning on the job with Idelia
My development in this career had a steep learning curve. I mostly learned from on-the-job training.
My background is actually in financial management. I stumbled into the IT industry. I initially started studying industrial engineering back in South Africa, but I was taking too much time. My mother said, “Either work or come back home.” I think most parents do that. So, I changed my focus to finance and started my career.
In most companies, the finance departments seemed to inherit the IT departments. I was in charge of the servers. I was in charge of setting up all the finance systems. So, my ending up in the technology field was purely by chance.
You learn how the technology works more if you learn it on the job as you go, rather than learning the theory and then trying to apply it.
